The 2024 Vesak holiday is certainly a time for some people to spend time in their hometowns due to the long weekend. However, for Puji Kurniawati, she had another agenda: breast enlargement.


Upon arriving in Yogyakarta on Friday morning, May 24, 2024, Puji reportedly contacted a salon that afternoon for a "consultation" about breast fillers. During the consultation, Puji asked if a 500-600cc filler volume could be performed. The salon stated that it would require observation to determine whether Puji's breast space was sufficient to accommodate such a volume. The consultation session concluded with an agreement of two million four hundred and fifty thousand rupiah per 100cc, and Puji made an initial payment of two hundred thousand rupiah. On Saturday, May 25, Puji took her sister Nita Pratiwi to the salon, claiming to get a haircut. Nita declined because she still had work to do. The breast filler procedure was carried out from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and Puji did not complain during the procedure. However, disaster struck when she complained of dizziness and stomach pain. The salon owner bought Puji Padang rice. Unfortunately for her, 10 minutes later she complained of nausea and vomiting.


Her suffering continued as she experienced seizures, similar to those of an epileptic. Afterward, she lay on the sofa, struggling to breathe. Around 5:00 PM, Puji was finally taken to Sadewa Hospital. The witness who transported Puji said that on the way, Puji groaned and had seizures, foaming at the mouth. Afterward, the witness saw Puji fall asleep, appearing to have fainted. Upon arrival at Sadewa Hospital, Puji had already died.


An autopsy performed on Sunday, May 26, 2024, revealed a thick, clear fluid seeping from the injection site. An examination of her organs revealed positive silicone in both breasts, lungs, and blood vessels. The autopsy concluded that Puji died of suffocation due to a silicone pulmonary embolism.


The two perpetrators, salon owner Sahat Maruli and injector Endah Karuniyawati, were each sentenced to three years and six months in prison.


They were also charged with civil offenses, requiring them to pay approximately 2 billion rupiah as compensation to Puji's family.
